Sex-linked inheritance of hearing and song in the Belgian Waterslager canary.

چکیده
Belgian Waterslager canaries have less sensitive hearing at high frequencies and produce songs with more energy at low frequencies than wild-type canaries. A backcross pedigree between Belgian Waterslager canaries and a domestic strain with wild-type song revealed inheritance patterns consistent with a factor of major effect located on the Z sex chromosome affecting both poor high-frequency hearing at 4 kHz and the relative energy in the spectra of the learned songs of males. Hearing thresholds at 4 kHz were significant predictors of the relative amount of song energy at 4 kHz for individual males. One hypothesis for the mechanistic basis of this correlation between hearing and song abnormalities is that a reduction in the ability to hear higher-frequency songs biases males towards learning lower-frequency songs.

Adult canaries (Serinus canarius) from a closebred colony of the Belgian "Waterslager" strain were trained with operant techniques to respond to pure tones. A psychophysical tracking procedure was used to measure absolute auditory thresholds in quiet and in noise. Absolute thresholds in the middle- to high-frequency region of the audiogram were between 30 and 40 dB higher (4-5 standard deviatio...

Pedigree Breeding: We created a backcross pedigree between the Belgian Waterslager (BWS) and Border canary strains (Supplementary Figure 1) using a breeding design similar to one previously used to analyze inheritance of song learning in the German Roller strain (Mundinger 1999). The male and female founder BWS canaries came from Holland and Belgium, respectively, and the Border stock from Engl...

We studied the mechanism of song production in the outbred common or domestic canary (Serinus canaria). The contribution that each side of the syrinx makes to song was investigated by observing the effect of unilaterally occluding the left or right primary bronchus, followed by section of the ipsilateral branch of the tracheosyringeal nerve. In other birds with a bilaterally intact vocal system...
